Kristie Camp
I taught secondary English Language Arts for 26 years at Gaffney High School. I advised the school newspaper for 21 years, and I produced the school’s pageant, Miss Cherokeean, for 16 years. I served as an AP reader for the College Board and as the department chair for the English department at Gaffney High School. In addition, I was an adjunct instructor in the Wardlaw College of Education at the University of South Carolina and an adjunct instructor in the English Department at Spartanburg Community College through their dual enrollment program with Gaffney High School. Finally, I completed my PhD program in Language and Literacy at the Wardlaw College of Education at the University of South Carolina. My area of research is adolescent literacy in the outdoor classroom.
I am no longer teaching fulltime, however, because I have been receiving chemotherapy treatments for colon cancer since August, 2023. I had resection surgery in January 2024, and I wore an ileostomy while I received adjuvant chemo in the spring of 2024. I had ileostomy reversal surgery in August 2024, and everything looked positive until another cancer spot developed on my liver in December 2024. I had another liver ablation in January 2025, and now I am experiencing what is often called, “wait and watch,” which means we wait to see if the tumors return. The blood tests say the cancer is still there, and we check every three months to see if it has grown enough to be seen on a CT scan.
For now, I spend my days working on my writing and trying to get stronger as I move forward as an academic professional.
